Here is another card from the Copic 201 - Greeting Farms Class for your viewing pleasure.

Isn't she just the cutest?? I especially love her wavy hair and colourful outfit....come to think of it I think I wore the exact same thing back then too!!

My little tip for this card? When you close cut a stamped image, use a black marker on the sides of the cutout so that you don't see the white sides of the card stock. It gives the image a much cleaner look.

Hi everyone.....I'm B...A...C.....K!!

I've just returned from the almost dead. What I mean by that is that this past Friday and Saturday I participated in a 24 hour non stop MS crop and even though I am exhausted from not sleeping for 24 hours it was totally worth it. Lots of fun/laughs/giddiness and prizes AND most importantly it has inspired me to blog.

ALL good things don't cha think?

Now, I have to clarify that I didn't stay awake for the full 24 hours - I took a nap for about 2 hours on Saturday.

What did I work on during the crop? Well class stuff of course!

Ever been to sea Billy? These are photos from 2007 and yes, I'm petting a shark. It was a nurse shark though and come on - if little kids will do it why won't I?? I must say though - I had to wash my hands immediately afterwards!! I'm a real germiphobe and those sharks were wet and fishy.

Back to using up stuff from the stash and this is photo paper bought in my early days of scrapping.

You have got to check this scraproom out. - GORGEOUS!!

BUT the other reason you have to check this out is the treadmill turned into a desk at the bottom of the page. Great idea - not sure how practical it is - AND I highly doubt that I would actually use it this way - but it is quite enterprising if I do say so myself.

Back to scrapping old photos AND to using up old embellis. I made a pact with myself to use up all my old stash and that means stickers. These are so old that they are from Creative Memories!! But I think they work as the photos are from a visit to a battleship.

I recently had the opportunity to go to a weekend Scrapbooking retreat. Yes those followers of my blog that aren't paper crafters - there is truly such a thing and stop yar' laughing!!

Basically - its a weekend of all out paper crafting/eating/yaking/laughing.

In this case I was up at the Erin Country Inn. A really nice place hosted by Vanessa and Judite. Very welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and I have to say that the food was awesome - especially the french toast.

Now, about that french toast - I'm a huge french toast fan and try to have it where ever it is offered. My all time favorite french toast was at Epcot in Orlando - it was in this diner on Main St USA. BUT that was before. NOW my all time favorite french toast is Judite's - OMG - AWESOME!! She wouldn't tell us the secret but it was made with home made croissants and there was cinnamon sugar all over it. YUMMY

Sorry, I got distracted....

What I learned about scrap retreats:

Don't pack alot of projects - you won't get to them all and you'll just end up lugging the stuff there and back. Page planning and being realistic about how productive you'll be is the best plan.
Don't pack your entire scrap room of tools - plan ahead with the group and share tools.
Take breaks - it's easy to get in work mode and forget that you need to play - you have the whole weekend - enjoy your self. PLUS, you'll be exhausted by Monday and your body will hate you if you don't take care of yourself.
Walk around the room and check what others are working on. I learned some great techniques this weekend (and have some new obsessions too - stay tuned for the mosaic layouts to be posted soon)
Pack clothes for warm or cold - you never know what the temperature will be in the inn/resort
Bring comfy shoes and clothes - trust me, some people will live in their p.j.s the entire weekend. I prefer fuzzy slippers and sweats.
Skip the makeup - again - why bother if you are in your p.j.s all weekend hanging with the girls
Bring healthy snacks too - we had way too much junk food (and booze) in the crop room and at 4 in the morning - it all looks good. Be kind to your body and your diet (I put on 4 lbs in 2.5 days - junk food or french toast??? I'm not sure)
Book Monday off work to recover - I know I needed it!!
Bring a thermal mug - easier to take your hot drink to the crop room from the kitchen
Bring a desk light (OTT) plus extension cord - you never know what the lighting will be like in the crop room because these places aren't really crop rooms - they are conference rooms.
Bring ear plugs/eyeshades - you may be sharing a room plus scrapping goes on alllllll night and noise can travel.
Don't forget your camera - I know it may seem obvious but I forgot mine. (hanging my head in shame)

I had an awesome time - met some new people - made some new friends. I'd definitely go again and as a matter of fact, I'm already planning another one!!

It's been well over a month since I last posted. But at least the layouts are stacking up in a pile to my right with a note that says "scan me". I'm currently working on a mini album commissioned project as well as designing a new fall class that will be on the Scrapalicious Calendar in September.

Just plain busy is all I can say.

Even though it's been all rain all the time these days I've still been able to catch some of the local music scene.

Some of my favorite acts?

BluSoul - a great R&B group that sings motown - we missed the last half hour of their show due to rain but I do hope to be able to see them again.

Gramps Morgan - We saw him at the irie music festival and he sang some great reggae. He has a new album out so go check him out if you can.

Byron Lee's Dragonaires - Byron Lee passed away in 2008 but the Dragonaires are still out touring and paying honour to their leader. This Jamaican Ska Calypso Soca band plays it all and they've been around forever. They even appeared in the first James Bond film Dr No! They of course played my husbands favorite "The Dollar Wine" - With the infectious lyric of "cent, 5 cent, 10 cent dollar".... Fabulous stage presence and even if you wanted to sit through the performance there is no way that they will ALLOW it with a song called " Get Something and Wave"

Unfortunately the Oakville Jazz Fest was washed out - we made it for a quick show by Luis Mario Ochoa but left half way through because the rain would just not go away. We caught his performance twice before and he has such a beautiful singing voice and an infectious cuban rhythm. If you like latin jazz - he's the man.

The Ex is on now - so that means the summer is almost over....sigh....

"1,500,000 children perished in the holocaust - In an effort to remember them, Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies.

The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition, currently scheduled for Spring 2012, for all to remember.

As of Summer 2008, we have already collected an estimated 400,000 butterflies."

It's the summer and that for me means outdoor concerts! Our favorite pastime is discovering new music genres and artists to add to our cd stash and yesterday was fabulous. We were all over town and the weather was perfect!

With all the hustle and bustle of Pride and the Toronto Jazz Fest - we were so glad that we made our way down to the Distillery District for the Toronto City Roots Music Festival. A free event with non stop music in a relaxed setting. They have 2 stages set up and they have great local acts.

We were lucky to catch the group Dala. This is a duet of guitar's and vocals and the girls are just fabulous. They have such a sweet sound to their voices and a new album out. Go check them out! The did a great cover version of "Both Sides Now" by Joni Mitchell AND they are from Scarborough.

Another act we caught was Jaffa Road. The City Roots website says this about them "Jaffa Road’s music looks to the future by blending tradition with innovation and bringing together diverse musical languages that include Jewish roots, jazz, Indian and Arabic music, electronica, and dub. With onstage chemistry as electrifying as it is intense, the band mixes ancient and original poetry in Hebrew, Spanish and English with belly dance rhythms, pulsating dub grooves, exhilarating improvisations, and a global mix of instrumentation."

We didn't understand alot of what they were singing - but do you really have to?? The music and the sound of the lead singer's voice is enough! A great group to see.

The last act we caught was Danny Marks. WOW what a performer. Danny has a radio show on Saturday nights on the jazz station FM91 and is a blues guitarist. Boy can he play! He had 2 guest performers with him on stage but I didn't catch their names.

A great show and a great evening out. Outdoor concerts are the best!! Just bring a cooler bag with drinks and a chair...heaven!

One funny that I just have to share is that the bar right next to the main stage was booked for a private party last night - It was a PRIDE party and everyone was wearing leather (or shall I say partially clad in leather). It was quite the distraction AND quite the juxtaposition. The mellow, granola eating bunch at the Roots concert right next to the disco/leather/S&M garb at the patio bar. During the Danny Marks show the 2 "parties" met on the dance floor in front of the stage for a brief moment....much to the horror of the seniors in the audience!!

The weather has just been gorgeous this past weekend and I just had to get off the computer and get out and about....

What better time to get the new camera and go take some shots. These were taken by DH but I am always the one to do the photoshop stuff after wards. Thanks to my buddy Martin - I think I'm getting pretty good at the colour correction and bumping up the brights.

Wow - what a crazy day!!

It was Mad Mary Scrappy Shopping Day with Angie - and we did it all in record time.

Stop 1 was the Open Page Warehouse Sale - I showed enormous restraint because most of the time I was keeping my eye on Angie!! I only spent about $100.

Stop 2 was DeSerres - nothing to buy but it's right around the corner - so what the heck - you just never know...

Stop 3 was the Scrapalicious Garage Sale - and it was a mad house - it always is. AND I scored big. A set of alphas dies for $35!! So....then what happens?? I decide to buy RELAX - but think hmmmm - lets go to lunch first. (That plus the fact that Angie kept saying how she was starving...) and we get back to the store - and the last box got sold. NOOOO!!

All is well though, Lancia says that more will be in soon....and so I can RELAX. BWAH HAHA.

Copic Marker Classes are starting this week over at Scrapalicious....are you joining in on the fun??

I just love my new copic markers and I think I'm getting good at using minimal quantity of markers to get the most possible shades in my personal projects.

I'm not sure if you know this BUT just because I'm teaching Copics - doesn't mean that I own all of them. I WISH~~!! These babies are pricey but sooo worth it. There are over 300 shades in the sketch style of marker and to be truthful, I personally own maybe 20. I vow to own them all bwah ha ha~~!! (if only the internet allowed you to hear the echo machine going when I screamed that).

The great thing about Copic markers is that they are refillable and totally blendable. So, just because you don't have everyshade - doesn't mean you can't make it your self.

So, mama needs more copics and all her teaching money is going directly to that cause...it's just so hard to choose between the shades....whimper.

April 12th?? My last post was April 12th? How the heck....? I guess time flies when you are having fun and things do get forgotten.

hmm...what have I been up to?

I was recently out in Fort Lauderdale and while I don't usually scrappy shop while I'm away (not). I did stumble upon (as in searched and emailed and harrased Michelle the owner for directions and to put some things on hold for me) a great little shop called "Cherry Blossom Studio". She has a great crop area with cushy seats for everyone and a large HD tv on the wall.

I didn't get to spend as much time shopping as I would have liked - due to the hubby waiting outside with the car running (note to self - learn how to navigate the interstate highways on my own next time). But I did get some goodies.

So, if you are ever in the Fort Lauderdale area and have access to a car - take a trip up to Coconut Grove - its a great area of town and the shop is in a nice plaza with other shops and restaurants.

Happy Easter!

I hope that everyone is having a great Easter weekend!

I know that I for one have been enjoying my time with friends and family.

I also had a chance to explore some of the great walking trails in my area with the hubby and my new toy. I've wanted a DSLR for so long and I've been envious of all those scrapbookers and photographers I know that own one. Well, Hubby found a deal that we couldn't refuse and I jumped at it right away. Here's the camera...

She's a beauty and is super light and small (perfect for my petite hands) and the perfect size for traveling.

Here are some pics of our little jaunt outdoors.

Now, I must be honest - I did shoot on automatic as I've only owned the camera for a day. AND I did do some photoshop colour adjustments. I'm quite pleased with the results and I hope to learn more about the world of photography.

I had a brain wave at the last minute (rare for me LOL ) and I decided to put an extra piece of CS in the middle but with slits cut in to hold a gift card.

The project actually turned out better than I had originally planned. I'm gonna make a bunch for Christmas now because we normally give all the nieces and nephews gift cards and this way it is all in 1 tidy little package.

I just love challenges - they really encourage productivity because you get a starting point to work from - to jump off from. Especially when Mr Mojo isn't visiting you scrap zone!

I also find being in the "company" of fellow scrappers online to be encouraging. You bounce off ideas and learn from each other - even though you are in a virtual world - you still make relationships/friendships. I've found that over at Scrapbookers Clubhouse. They are a great gang of girls.

Give a forum a try. Go and lurk for a while, check out the challenges and see if you think you will mesh with them. Then register.....participate.....have fun.

Well....it's official - I'm a Copic Certified Designer!

I've had lots of experience with alcohol based markers from back in art school. (I bet you didn't know that there is actually a course in college called marker 101!) but I was nervous at first going to the course because quite honestly I haven't had much experience with this specific product. BUT now its full steam ahead. The markers are amazing and so versatile and they no longer have that stinky smell.

It was a full day course with Marianne Walker (Copic Instructor extraordinaire) and I learned every little thing and more that there is to know about the Copic Marker.

Now its practice practice practice until I get technique just right.

I also have a huge shopping list for all the markers AND the air brush system....

When it rains it pours....

So busy these days - too busy in fact to scan and upload all the craftiness I've been up to!

BUT - I did want to post the fact that I saw Dirty Dancing the musical last night!

Now, you all must have seen the movie right? "The classic story on stage" (or so the tagline reads) all the lines about baby in the corner etc.... Well, if you haven't...you can see this musical and watch every single moment of it recreated. AND that's the problem - they did in fact recreate every single moment - whether it was vital to the show or not.

Here's my review of the show

Likes:

worth it for the $30 ticket price each - 3rd row centre too
great night out with girlfriends
guilty pleasure
great costumes - the dresses from the 60's are just gorgeous
music was great
singing was great
back up dancers were fabulous
Baby was quite good

Dislikes:

Johnny Castle actor was wooden and there was no chemistry between him and baby
Baby was funny - too funny - she's not supposed to be funny...
the lead dancers weren't as good as the backup dancers
hated the Penny character
3rd row seating is way too close - it's hard to see the entire stage - I think 1st row balcony would be better
Johnny Castle is supposed to be a gorgeous, sleek, muscular dancer - this guy needed to do some crunches and pushups - especially because he is shirtless or in a tank top for most of the show
is it really necessary to recreate every single line and move from the movie?? I guess, if you are a die hard fan you demand it but what about creative license??

That's it. Now, would I see it again - NO. Will I watch the movie version again - DEFINITELY. So, gang - skip the theatre and spend the money to buy the extended version of the movie instead.

Not much scrap time for me lately but today I got a little caught up on my 52 pick me up cards. I still have a ways to go on scrappy projects but slowly and steadily it will happen.

The sun is shining today and it seems a shame to be indoors - but indoors I am and will stay...

Some new developments that I thought I would update all you in blogger land is that I've finally jumped on the Copic Marker bandwagon.

It takes a while for me to jump onto things because - well --- they are a little pricey for me at the moment and although I am freelance designing - I'm not working everyday. A girl has to watch her play money ya'know.

The markers are alcohol based and remind me so much of artschool days - except without the stinky smell. AND I do LOOOOVE to colour!

I was lucky to notice on the Copic Marker website that they have instructor certification classes AND that one was going to be taking place close to home - SO I stalked Marianne (the guru of Copic Markers) for a couple of days and I got accepted - YIPPEE. So a-copic I will go in the next couple of weeks. Can't wait until the workshop. I just love learning new things and getting the REAL scoop on the products (as opposed to a whole lot of poop).

The other thing is that gal pal Nancy will be attending as well!!

The scanner is being temperamental at the moment but once I get it working smoothly, I'll post a few cards I created using the markers.

So much happening and not all of it scrappy!

I'm officially a freelance graphic designer - in that I'm no longer employed.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing - only time will tell. BUT so far so good. Unfortunately, there has been no time for scrappiness.

BUT that will change as this Saturday I'll be going to an all day crop over at Scrapalicious. If you are a follower of my blog you'll know that I don't crop that often - especially all day from 9 am to midnight. I just can't physically/mentally last that long!!

But I have a PLAN!!

bringing slippers
wearing sweats
bringing my obus forme back rest and cushy seat
communter cup - so there is no spillage
paper bag to tape to the side of the table for garbage/scraps
timer to make me stand up and stretch every hour

Sounds crazy but in order to last til the end - ya gotta be prepared!!

I can't believe that I haven't posted since Nov 15!!

So much has happened - I was in Europe for a few weeks and then the madness of prepping for Christmas and NOW here we are Christmas Eve!!

There is still sooo much to do before tomorrow and no time at the moment to put down a proper post but I had to jump on to say...

Wow, it's been awhile since I just wrote on the blog without including any projects.

Why so busy you ask??

Well, with working full time, freelance graphics part-time, teaching at Scrapalicious and being on the design team of Scrapbookers Clubhouse a girl needs a break kwim??

At least now my term at Craft Critique is over and I can get a little bit of a breather.

I haven't been scrappy for the last week or so due to a crazy work schedule but stay tuned for some new projects....I already have my next kit from the Clubhouse and it is cute as can be - I just LOVE it (hint hint)

Plus this month I get to create the online class at Scrapbookers Clubhouse and I'm gonna try and make it a good one....

My last article went online October 1st at Craft Critique.
This time I review Inque Boutique stamps....

I've seen the ads for Inque Boutique Stamps online on Splitcoast Stampers and other websites but I had never seen them in person, and quite honestly I thought they were just another hybrid stamp company. Now that I have them in my hands I realize that they are oh so different.

Inque Boutique carries the following stamp collections:

Sugar Shoppe Stamps
Savoir Faire Stamps
Stephanie Barnard Stamps (she is on their DT and writes their blog)
Morsels Stamps
Lil' Stamps
Inque Boutique Clear Stamps

Why they are fabulous:

Price point is great. You can get single small multi pack stamps for under $2 Cdn. and larger sets of 10 stamps or so for around $13. Cdn. (That's a steal!)
They are hybrid meaning that they are unmounted rubber that clings to acrylic blocks. I personally prefer rubber to acrylic/polymer stamps because I always find if you put too much pressure on an acrylic/polymer stamp, the image squishes and gets distorted. PLUS, we aren't superhuman and we don't have x-ray vision to see through wooden blocks. Hybrid stamps are the best of both worlds.
They have ingeniously taken the step to print the image of the stamp on the back side of the rubber. Now you can see which stamp is which and whether you have it upside down or not.
You get a storage case with the large sets. (one tip is that if you wanted to, you could cling your stamps directly to the case instead of using the mounting card)
With every stamp set you get what they call "the secret weapon" - a black stamping mat. This is a foam sheet for you to place your card stock on top of so that when you stamp with the rubber - you get a perfect impression - much like stamping on a mouse pad. The mat has some "give" versus the hard surface of a table. Plus, if you stock up on a lot of Inque Boutique stamp sets and you end up with a lot of these mats you can either put one in every crop bag (just in case) or I'm sure you can recycle them into a craft of some sort (wink).

One item they carry are these fab plastic cases called "Stamp Keepers", that are 3 hole punched so that you can store your cling stamps inside binders....I plan on stocking up on these....but I digress as this is a review on the stamps themselves.

If you visit their website (http://www.goinque.com/) you will see that they sell all kinds of items for stamping. While you are there, become a member - it's free and with it you get access to an idea gallery, contests, tips, downloads, videos, newsletter, blog, store locations etc. The contests are great, specifically the weekly gallery contest - 1 winner every week gets $50 in free stamps and all you have to do to enter is upload to the gallery!

One thing that I should add is that Inque Boutique is trying to promote their products so as an added incentive, get your LSS to carry their stamps and you BOTH will get some freebies (download the consumer referral form from the downloads area)

They did have a designer referral program where if you use their stamps on a project and it gets pubbed you will also get freebies but sadly they have suspended this program for some revisions...but stay tuned.

Here is a layout I created with my Inque Boutique stamp set - "Flurries"

(Basic Grey PP, Bazzill CS, Versamark and Stampin' Up Night of Navy ink pad and marker)

Pros:

rubber is printed on the back so that you can see the image through the acrylic block
comes with a storage case and a preprinted label
price point is awesome for this quality
stamps are deeply carved and you get a pretty crisp impression when you use their snazzy stamping mat
additional cling just in case is a nice touch

Cons:

pink rubber stained easily
once I started stamping with them I couldn't get them to fit back on the mounting card - it's like a puzzle trying to get them back where they were (or is this just me - LOL??)

I really like this stamp company, the styles are cute and with this price point and quality you can't help but want more and more and more.

(Inque Boutique was previously known as Sugarloaf Stamps and was relaunched at CHA-Summer 2007. At this past CHA-Winter 2008, they announced the expansion from their stamps, inks and stamping accessories into paper. At time of writing this review I found out that Inque Boutique had been bought out by Darice....not sure what the implications of this are but I do hope that this brand stays as it is.)

Online Sketch Sites Review

This review is on two online sketch sources: Pencil Lines Sketch Blog and Becky Higgins Sketches of Creative Keepsakes Magazine.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary the word Sketch is defined as:

a rough drawing representing the chief features of an object or scene and often made as a preliminary study

What I love about sketches?
I love the fact that half of the work is already done for you leaving your mind free to concentrate on the paper, colors, and embellishments. Sketches are perfect if you are in a hurry or if you've lost your mojo and you are trying to get it back.

Where does one get a sketch online?
There are lots of blog sites and websites to chose from on the internet and they are easily found by doing a simple Google search. Sketches can also be found as sketch challenges on scrapbooking forums or if you subscribe to a kit club, you often get sketches to inspire you within your kit.

Speaking of inspiration....sketches are just that. Now that's not to say that you can't just copy the sketch exactly. That's what they are for after all. But another option is to mix it up a bit - rotate the sketch, mirror the sketch, use a 12x12 sketch on a 8.5x11 layout or vice versa - let your imagination go wild. Sketches are just a base to kick start your creativity.

Becky Higgins
Becky Higgins is part of Creating Keepsakes Scrapbooking Magazine. Her sketches are featured in the paper version magazine, the website and a multitude of books including her own authored books.

According to the Creating Keepsakes website "Becky Higgins' sketches are the little black dress (LBD) of scrapbooking. Whether you dress them up with embellishments or stick to the basics, they work for all occasions." So true, so true...

Becky Higgins has been around for quite a while. I know that when I first got into scrapping I turned to her website for sketches. That was back oh about 5 years ago before the rise of the BLOG. There were few sources for sketches online and this was the mother lode for me at the time. I must admit that after blogging got big and I discovered other sources for inspiration...I stopped visiting the website.

Now I must be truthful, when I came up with the idea to review sketch sites for Craft Critique I instantly thought of Becky Higgins BUT I should have done some fact checking first! (my bad) As I quickly discovered, the Creative Keepsakes online sketches haven't been updated since 2006!! Not sure why this is but I can only suspect that its because they want you to buy one of the books that Becky Higgins has written instead.

I do like the sketches that are on the site especially because they are all multi-photo. I know that this is an old trend but hey - we take a lot of photos right? - why not put them all on one layout?? The sketches are all clearly defined and easy to download, well organized by number of photos per layout. But I do find them a little too simplistic - but that may be because they are outdated. If you are a beginner scrapper - these may be perfect for you because they aren't overwhelming at all.

This is one of her sketches from March 2003.

Here is my interpretation of the sketch. (I only used the left side)

I should add as well that Becky has her own website. On it she has a blog, a store, and a recipe site....no sketches however.

Pros:

well organized, easy to navigate
multi-photo layouts
clear drawings with clearly defined areas for title and journaling
sketches appear with a short paragraph of introduction as well as a layout showing an interpretation of the sketch

Cons:

sketches haven’t been updated since 2006
all sketches are multi-photo
most sketches are very basic and linear
only 1 interpretation of the sketch is shown
no where to provide feedback or chat with others about the sketch or to upload your interpretation

Pencil Lines Sketch Blog

Pencil Lines got its start in October 2006, and is a new discovery for me. They have a really neat concept and a well laid out website. There is a core International Design Team that interprets each weekly sketch and either a guest designer or one of the Design Teams designs the sketch. A new sketch gets posted every Sunday night. They have over 100 sketches at the moment available for download.

According to their website "Pencil Lines is a blog all about using sketches to expand your artistic horizons, get you outside your box, and lift you out of scrappers block and to help you get more layouts done. It is about thinking outside your normal processes to create something wonderful."
There is definitely a lot of fabulous eye candy on this site. Each month the Design Team chooses the best layout from readers’ submissions for a prize plus they often have sponsored prizes from manufacturers. All submissions get loaded into the readers’ gallery (more eye candy!)

I really enjoyed my visit and use of this website - and I plan to return again and again.

Here's the sketch that I chose to use - It's Sketch # 52 by Emeline Ng.

Here's my interpretation of the sketch.

All in all, I love sketches and I love using sketches from different sources - variety is the spice of life after all. Check out some sketch sites and find some inspiration.

Dove of the East Review

My review today is on Dove of the East products. There is a niche market out there for ethnic theme paper especially with the increase in world travel, adoption abroad, not to mention the fact that scrapbooking and cardmaking are international hobbies. Personally, when I scrap trips to Mexico I don't want tacos and sombreros all over my pages - it just isn't my style - but the gorgeous patterns of the Mexican culture - NOW that would be gorgeous. Also, I am of Asian descent and I've always found it difficult to scrap old family photos because there just aren't that many "nice" Asian theme papers out there. Don't get me wrong - you see them but often they are stereotypical with rice bowls and chopsticks etc.

That's why I was overjoyed when I found Dove of the East papers at my local scrapbooking store Scrapalicious.

When you visit the Dove of the East website it is clearly organized by their lines of product — each entitled "Journeys"

Russia
Japan
India
China
Beach Baby - Love

To be honest, I don't really understand the new "Beach Baby - Love" line because it doesn't go with the "journey" theme plus it consists entirely of charms - odd?

All papers are acid free, elemental chlorine free and come from commercially managed forests. They also have coordinating ribbon, rub-ons, stickers, charms and stamps.

The really neat thing that they've done is they have these "Treasure" boxes for the Russia and China line. Each box contains an assortment of embellishments. Now if only I could get my hands on this gorgeous item - this would look awesome in my scrap room!

In fact all of the Dove of the East embellishments are packaged in organza bags or mounted on printed cards, designed so that even the packaging can be used in your projects.

The colors and patterns are so gorgeous and intricate I actually have a hard time using them for layouts because I don't want to cover the patterns up with photos!

The other great thing is that on the China paper they have both Chinese characters PLUS the English translation of the poem. I can only read/write English (sorry Mom and Dad) and so the translation is super helpful because I always want to know what is written on the paper to match it to the appropriate photo/theme.

Here is an example of a layout from a past trip to India. The papers in the India line remind me of the beautiful silk saris we saw throughout the country.

Just because you aren't a world traveller or of a certain ethnicity doesn't mean that you can't use these papers. The colors and patterns are rich and vibrant and work beautifully for cards or other types of layouts. Just use your imagination and creativity!

Pros:

nice quality
heavy paper weight
rich, vibrant colors
coordinating rub-ons, ribbon, stamps and embellishments
all papers are acid free, elemental chlorine free and come from commercially managed forests.
unique reusable packaging

Cons:

not a well known scrapbooking line so it may be difficult to find in your LSS
they do not have their own online store
limited pattern selection and availability

Price points are comparable to other manufacturers.

Now, I have to say that Owls are not my thing - I find them too cutesy or something.... and YES I know that they are a huge trend but hey - so shoot me if I don't love the owl.

BUT I gotta say, this layout turned out really cute (in my opinion). The owl paper went perfectly with these old photos of the nephews in the bird costumes I made them (and I do mean old because Daniel is in University now!).

hmm.... maybe my opinion of the owl is changing....

Coloured Pencil Crayons comparison/review

Colored Pencils/Pencil Crayons...we all have them in our pencil cases. I think I got my first set when I was a child right after I graduated from kindergarten and wax crayons. But the question is - what do you look for and which brand is the best for you? In this review I compare 7 different brands from my stash.

Here's the scoop on what I discovered in preparing this review.

I have a lot in my stash! I'm not sure how I've collected so many but I gotta stop!
Americans call them Colored Pencils - we Canadians call them Pencil Crayons. Both are the same.

Each brand has a different softness/hardness to the lead. A good quality pencil will be soft enough not to scratch the paper/surface but hard enough not to break (I personally hate it when you sharpen a pencil and the lead is all shattered within the wood)
Each brand has a different shape to the wood and thus fits in your hand differently - think ergonomics
They really should be blendable and for this I mean truly blendable so that you can mix two colours together and get a "true" third colour. (Remember colour theory? Mixing two primary colours together gets you a secondary colour etc)
Price does not equal quality

Explanation of my tests:

All pencils were tested on Canson 120 lb Watercolor Paper
I tried to find all the same shades of blue and yellow for the tests but you can see variances in the shades
Gamsol (odorless mineral spirits) was applied with a fresh cotton swab between each test
Dove blender was cleaned between each test
Water colour test is plain water and a brush - fresh water and clean brush for each test

Explanation of the results/brands tested
Brands are charted/reviewed in alphabetical order and are all from my stash.
Number of dollar signs = price
Score = number of tests passed out of 6

Create Like Crazy (Target Brands Inc.) a USA based company - I wasn't able to locate where these pencils are manufactured. I consider these to be generic, inexpensive brand - suitable for the kids. The lead was more on the hard side and did not shatter when sharpening. They really only did well at plain colouring and with Gamsol producing a true green when blended with a second colour. ($ - 2 out of 6)
Conté a Paris - Made in France. They are considered to be of fine artist grade, soft and smooth on paper, and did not shatter when sharpened. These are actually water colour pencils and they tested well with water (as expected), well with the dove blender but failed with the Gamsol. ($$$ - 4 out of 6)
Laurentien - Made in Canada. These are the old standard school brand here in Canada and therefore are fairly inexpensive. I would say that these are better in quality then the Create Like Crazy and Maped brands but I still would leave these for the kids. They passed the Gamsol tests but neither the dove blender or water. ($ - 2 out of 6)
Lyra - Made in Germany. They are considered to be of fine artist grade - soft, sharpen without breakage and have a nice ergonomic triangular shape. These are the brand that I normally go to when colouring AND they surprisingly failed the blending test. I'm not sure why I never noticed this before but they produced a mucky shade of "I don't know" when blended. They did well when used with Gamsol, Blender and water alone though ($$$ - 3 out of 6)
Maped Color'Peps - Made in France. These failed all the tests - so give these to the kids - good, inexpensive generic brand. ($ - 0 out of 6)
Prismacolour - Made in Canada. They are considered to be of fine artist grade. These are soft and I find shatter when sharpening. They passed the Gamsol test but neither the Dove blender nor the water tests. ($$ - 2 out of 6)
Stampin' Up! - Made in Germany for Stampin' Up!. Purchased only through a Stampin' Up independent demonstrator these are labeled as water colour pencils. They sharpen easily without breakage and are soft on paper. They passed all the tests with flying colours (get it - flying colours LOL) ($$$ - 6 out of 6)

I have to say I was quite surprised by the results because my pencil of choice has been the Lyra brand. Now that I've done these tests I am switching to the Stampin' Up! brand just for the versatility and blending (I've had these for years and I've probably only used them twice.) I realize that you may not be using your pencil crayons to do all these things... but to me why not get your moneys worth and get multiple uses out of one product?

Here's a pic of a project using my new "go to" brand.

Tips:

To help prevent breakage If your pencils are stored in a tin - cushion the inside. I line my tin with paper towel and make rolled up little "bumpers" for the sides
Make a colour reference chart on a scrap piece of card stock and store it with the pencils. With this you can see what the actual colour is without guessing. It's difficult to tell just by looking at the lead and the paint on the wood is not accurate - don't forget to label the shades/numbers on your reference chart. (trust me on this - DOH!)
Get a good quality pencil sharpener.
I take my pencils on vacation with me. I get bored reading and so I pre-stamp a stack of designs using permanent ink, bring my tin of pencils (and sharpener), bottle of water and a brush and paint away. Works perfectly for a long plane ride - great and portable!

In general Colored Pencils/Pencil Crayons are a great, inexpensive, portable, colouring medium with multiple uses. As you can see by my stash, they are easy to find, easy to use and not too expensive to collect all the colours in the rainbow. They can be purchased anywhere but check out Dick Blick, Curry's, Michaels.

Heidi Swap Acrylic Paint

The first time I used Heidi Swapp Acrylic Paint was when I took a chipboard album class at my LSS Scrapalcious. We used the Jet Black version. Now, I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to painting on chipboard – especially in a 2-hour class situation. First, it’s messy and I likely just came from work and I’m not dressed in my civvies. Secondly, paint takes time to dry and you want to make sure that you get a nice even coat before you move onto the next stage. Now don’t get me wrong, I love paint, I just like to paint on my own terms in optimum conditions where I can put multiple coats on until it’s perfect and then leave it out to dry over night.

But I digress..

So, there I was at the class, painting away and here’s what I discovered…

The paint was nice and creamy, we squirted it out onto a paper plate but really, you could squeeze it right out of the tube and onto your brush.

The Jet Black is super black – not a wishy washy could be black but isn’t quite black – know what I mean? With the thickness of the paint came great coverage – it was opaque with no streaks or show through.

I was really impressed with the drying speed. PLUS when it dried it had a nice finish with a slight sheen to it.

Ultimately, I had no reason to worry about the painting because in 2 hours flat we created a fab 8-page album that fits in a box.

Here’s a close up of the paint on the project we made (the shiny finish looks great with the crispness of the black and white American Crafts paper)

After the class I had to buy some paint for my own stash (I’m a good customer and I’m easily persuaded). So, I picked up these colours - Betty (pink), Jet (black), bark (brown) and moss.

Next project I made with the paint was this girlie girl mini book (paper is Basic Grey Two Scoops).

I’m not really a pink kinda gal but the "Betty" (pink) colour is really nice – it isn’t baby pink - its much deeper and punchier similar to a fuchsia pink.

Now I wanted to show you what the paint looks like in a large area. So, I decided to paint a chipboard heart for a card. And, this is where I discovered something. On the other 2 projects I used a foam brush to apply the paint and in this instance I used an artist's hair brush. Can you see the brush strokes?? Disappointing but true - so, be warned. (Now a friend did say it kinda looked like leather - which I promptly said "Yes that's the look I was going for" but to be truthful I really wasn't)

Now, I haven’t told you how many colours the paint comes in and the reason is that I can’t find that information!

When visiting the Heidi Swapp website, the downloaded catalog for paint states that it comes in 9 colors. But looking through various online stores, I’ve counted 11 different colors mentioned. Plus, no ONE store seems to have the all the colors in stock.

Pros:

Tube stands up straight on a table
Clear container so that you can see how much you have left in the tube
Nice sheen
Coordinates with the other Heidi Swapp items (if you like to be all matchie-poo like I do)

Black is really black
Cleans up with water
Dries fast

Cons:

Limited colour selection
For adding some paint onto a layout, this paint is the perfect consistency but I found I needed to add a little bit of water when I was painting my chipboard – the paint was too thick.
Due to the slight sheen to the paint when dry – it may not “suit” all tastes and moods of projects
Watch out for brush strokes
Limited stock in stores

All in all, I really like this product. I wish that it came in more colours and that I could get my hand on all of them.

I give it an 8 out of 10. It retails for $2.99 US at Scrapbook.com and $3.99 CAD at My Scrap Shoppe.com for a 2.5 oz tube.

Embroidery Floss for Scrapbooking

I have had many hobbies in my past — knitting, crochet, quilting, and cross-stitch to name but a few. With all exes (spouses included!), you have items that you need to reduce, recycle, reuse or burn (anyone seen Waiting to Exhale?) to make room for the NEW.

One day as I was cleaning up, I got that big light bulb over my head and thought how about using embroidery floss in my card and scrapbook projects. (Now I'm sure I wasn't the first to come up with this idea but to me, it was a big deal!) Pulling out the old needle and thread and using embroidery floss in my new craft was also the solution to my other problem of hating to lug the big sewing machine around.

I use my paper-piercing tool and my Tim Holtz Design Ruler to pre-punch my “path” before I hand sew through the card stock – this way I don’t lose track of where I’m going. A tip is to put a thick mouse pad underneath while you are poking to protect your work surface.

I use all 6 threads of the floss and a wide-eyed needle. Starting at the back, I run a little bit of dry adhesive and I stick the end of the floss to lock it in place. I prefer this way of “knotting” my floss so that you don’t see the bump on the good side of the card stock. Then I stitch away.

Here is my finished project - you can see the stitching in the top left, bottom right and as a detail along the side of the photos. (Layout is based on a sketch provided by my friend Noella)

Now don’t think that you have to use it just for sewing, embroidery thread is a great substitute for ribbon. Whatever and wherever your imagination takes you!

Now upon writing this article I started thinking... is this stuff archival safe? (I probably should have thought of this earlier before I used it!) As a good reporter should, I started fact checking and emailed DMC USA for the answer. Ms. DMC herself responded promptly to me via email telling me that their embroidery floss was safe for scrapbooking.

If you are still worried – there is also Karen Foster “scrappers floss”. An acid free paper product made to look like embroidery floss.

Pros:
- Comes in a hundreds of colours and shades
- Inexpensive – so you can stock up OR use it in excess
- Sold in packs or individually
- Multitude of uses
- Found everywhere craft supplies are sold (i.e., Michaels, Joann)
- Comes in a multitude of finishes – satin, cotton, linen, metallic, glow in the dark
- Colour fast so it won’t fade
- 8 meter lengths/8.7 yards
- Archival safe

Cons:
- Difficult to thread the needle at times (due to the multiple threads)
- Does leave some lumps on the surface of your project depending on how many threads and how intricate the design you stitch
- Watch how close you place the holes especially if you plan an intricate design. This isn't fabric and therefore isn't as flexible. You don't want to accidentally tear your card stock
- Card stock isn't as forgiving as fabric - plan, plan plan - you don't want to put a hole where you don't plan on stitching.

Give it a try and break into those old cross-stitch kits and start embroidering on your cards! Now if only I could incorporate country line dancing into scrapbooking!

Fiskars Fingertip Craft Knife Review

I have a background in Graphic Design, so it was only natural that when I started into the world of paper crafting that I went for the old basics from art school in terms of tools. Going back in time to all the usual standbys like a metal ruler and a straight edge blade. We've all heard the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it"... but how about MY new saying? "It may not be broken but maybe it CAN be better?" The Fiskars Fingertip Craft Knife is part of my new bag of tricks and I'll tell you why.

On regular knives the shaft is like a pen but without any options of cushions or rubber to make it the handle more comfortable for your fingers. Also, I have small hands and I always found regular straight blades to be awkward especially after a long day of cutting fine details. So, when I saw this strange looking device on the wall of my local scrapbooking store, I was intrigued.

How it works is that you insert your index finger through the loop. The sides of the loop act as a place to "rest" your thumb and third finger. This gives you more control and comfort while you cut as the tip of your index finger is what's guiding the knife.

Here's a photo of the Fingertip knife next to my other knife by Stampin' Up.

I cut on a glass mat when I am doing fine detail work and because I wasn't used to the grip of the handle the first time I used the knife I broke off a teeny weeny piece of the tip - I actually heard a little snap. It is still totally usable and didn't affect the blade at all but just watch that you don't use too much pressure.

In this example you can see how the Fingertip knife made fast work of trimming around these flowers. One tip when using any knife is to keep the knife stationary and to actually move the paper instead.

Pros:

I do like the bright trademark Fiskars orange handle, it makes it easier to spot in my black craft tote.
The knife has great control when cutting.
It's comfortable in your hand and because of its odd shape it won't roll off the table (like my regular knife always does).

Cons:

Due to the design/shape I do find it gets lost sometimes in my craft bag - mainly because I don't have a "slot" for it and it doesn't fit in the pen slots like other knives do.
I do have a beef with all knives with "arrow head" shaped blades and it's that the normal paper crafter only really uses the top 25% of the blade. So, the top tip of the blade gets dull and you have to replace it, but yet the other 75% of the blade is still sharp as a knife (pun intended). I think it would be an awesome idea if they came up with blades that had different lengths and you could use the one that suited what you were cutting.
Speaking of blades; I do wish it came with a few replacement blades in the package just for convenience sake but that's just being picky on my part. Also, I know that the point to the design is that it is compact but I always wonder why they don't make allowances to have the replacement blades contained within the knife itself so you don't have to look through all your drawers to find that 1 replacement blade that you bought last month, tucked away for safe keeping, and NOW can no longer find the knife in the growing pile of scrap (grumble grumble).

All in all though, for the price, this is an awesome alternative to regular knives. It does take some time to get used to, mostly because we are all creatures of habit and knives just aren't meant to be held like this. Once you get used to the design you will love how much control you have all at your fingertips.

So, I guess you really can teach an old dog like me new tricks!

Simply Cards Today Book Review

I really love this book published by Scrapbooks & Cards Today Inc. the same publishers of Scrapbooks & Cards Today Magazine*. The books smallish size (8"x8") makes it easy to keep on your desk OR to carry with you when you are at your 10th hour of cropping and you need some quick inspiration.

*Scrapbooks & Cards Today Magazine is a free publication published 4 times a year (spring, summer, fall, winter) and is available through retailers across Canada and in some states in the US and Netherlands. It is also available for free download on their website.

If you are a follower of the magazine, you will notice that the art direction of the book is of similar quality. Also, you will recognize that the magazines design team also appear in the book.

Simply Cards Today is a 130 page book of card eye candy separated into 9 chapters:

Simply Spring
Simply Summer
Simply Fall
Simply Winter
Simply Sketches
Simply Unique
Simply Masculine
Simply Techniques
Simply Sealed

Each page in the book features 1 photo of a card, a close up detailed photo, manufacturers products used and instructions including some measurements. I must say that the photography is really nicely done with each card staged with various props in an appropriate setting. The cards showcased are easily adapted to other papers, colours and themes.

The chapters of the book are nicely thought out. I love the fact that they have separated the book out in seasons as well as masculine cards and unique (shaped) cards. The Simply Sealed section includes envelope templates and even a recipe for home made envelope glue.

Every so often throughout the book there are tips, suggestions, facts and quotes to compliment the chapters. I thought that the quotes were really original and would be great for journaling cues on scrap layouts or for verses to add to your cards. The quotes come from all sources too - from old literature to even a quote from actress Drew Barrymore!

There were a few ads within the book - which is odd given that this is a book and not a magazine. The ads are interesting to read though, well disguised and also probably one of the reasons why this book is affordable. Peppered between chapters and under the heading of "Catching Up With...", a manufacturer would be highlighted. There would be some details about the history of the company, a few product shots and a "What's New?" section.

Things for improvement are minor:

A section with bios/blogs of the designers would be great. I for one would really like to learn more about who these people are and potentially stalk them!
The sketch section only shows 5 sketches. I wonder why they even bothered including sketches at all since the layouts of the cards are very easily determined in the photos provided. I would have preferred more cards and templates!

This was the first book offering by Scrapbook & Cards Today Inc. and I for one look forward to seeing what other books they come up with in the future.

It's been well over a week - and yes it's because I've been so busy that I forgot to blog haha.

Physio is still ongoing for the repetitive strain but it is feeling better.

EWF was awesome - really really good concert and we were treated like royalty by my good friend Joanne. We were comped EVERYTHING which was a big bonus.

Now back to scrappiness...

What does this have to do with Paper Crafts - well nothing really....
I don't normally discuss movies or rant on here but just this once I thought I would.

So, I saw the Dark Knight the other night and well....it was dark..

The movie was good - really good - lots of great special effects, good story, lots of action. There was 1 moment where the entire theatre screamed out "whoa" and then 30 seconds they screamed out "whoa" again!! Heath Ledger was really fabulous and scary. He was totally creepy and totally believable as a psycho killer.

(this is where the rant starts)

So, there I am in the theatre - creeped out by the Joker character - and I start thinking...man this could be real. I could totally see some psycho with clown makeup running around and killing people etc. Then I look around....the theatre is filled with young kids - REALLY young kids. This is NOT a kids movie. Why would parents take their kids under 12 to see this? I saw a couple of little girls carrying dolls!! Now if there are moments where I turn and look away....what are these little girls thinking!! Come on parents - be responsible - either do a pre-screening or consult with people who have seen the movie BEFORE bringing your own.

I was crossing my fingers and toes (and eyes) and I got it.
I'm going to be on the Scrapbookers Clubhouse design team from August to the end of November.

So excited and pumped because I just love those gals over there.

I can't wait until I get my assignments.

I've been really creative lately and have been scrapping up a storm. Here is a layout for a sketch challenge over at Scrapbookers Clubhouse. You know I love it there because I just talk about those girls all the time - they are my scrappin' family....and they love me "just as I am".

(that quote is from the movie Bridget Jones' Diary btw)

Anyhoo - title of the layout is 3 Amigos and to carry that through I used 3 circles, 3 brads. Pattern Paper is Basic Grey (my fave) and Cardstock is Stampin' Up - with some inking and marker stitching thrown in for some interest.

Oh paypal.....how you've disappointed me....

I've been hacked and it's a good thing I was online at the time and saw the email transactions - all 1 minute apart. I luckily was surfing through various scrapping sites when I noticed it and promptly called paypal - (LONG DISTANCE I might add - ummmm hello paypal - have you not heard of 1-800??!!). They got me 7 times for a total of approx $3,000 US. I shudder to think of how high it would have went if I wasn't online to see it instantly happen.

I thought Paypal was secure and that this couldn't happen???

Paypal account frozen - credit card canceled - passwords changed - paperwork in progress to reverse all charges.

whew - an exhausting Sunday evening.....

Lesson learned ?

Change your passwords often - Keep a separate credit card/account specifically for online purchases.

As promised here's another layout...

I know it is a Christmas one - but if you are like me - I don't scrap in order or with the seasons...

This was for a sketch challenge on Scrapbookers clubhouse. The challenges really make me work in a defined time period. PLUS lately I've found that I've been scrapping faster and not spending as much time dwelling on things... is this good or bad > not sure...

Anyway, back to the layout - this one is a little unconventional too because I'm not using Christmas paper. It is Basic Grey - from the Mellow collection (I think). How I made it Christmasy - I stamped snowflakes on it. I think it works....

*Hidden journaling on a card tag that gets pulled out courtesy of the ribbon bow...

Also, I'm using brand new Quickutz die cut letters on this layout - a new and ADDICTIVE purchase because now I want ALL the alphabet dies.

Where the heck has Mary been???? I really don't know to be honest...it's the summer - and well, I've been lazy and haven't been posting. But I'm back and I got stuff to share so here I am.

What's going on?

CHA is on at the moment - there are tons of posts going on everywhere with pics and the happenings at the Craft and Hobby Association trade show.

Check out Scrap Scene or Craft Critique and you'll see all kinds of news on the trends and what will be appearing in the stores shortly.

I have a few classes going on at Scrapalicious. One of note is that we are taking registrations for Silhouette 201. It's still in the design phase but the first class will be happening in August.

I've been scrapping up a storm - that's probably why I haven't had time to post on here.

Here is a altered candy tin that sits proudly on my office cubicle bookcase - note how it matches my "hello kitty" tissue box cover....

When taking a class at your LSS (Local Scrapbook Store) you are often asked to bring a basic tool kit.

What is a Basic Tool Kit?

These are the basics. Some classes may require you to bring additional tools. This is even a great list of some of the first items you need when starting to scrap!

This is what I would bring:

- a portable trimmer
- scissors
- adhesives - wet and dry ie. Zip Dry, tape runners, glue dots
- ruler
- pencil
- eraser
- black journalling pen
- craft knife
- cutting mat

As well, I would bring:
- black ink
- brown ink
- crop-a-dile

And if you are making cards, definitely bring:
- a bone folder

And a Bag to put everything in!!!

Hanging with my gal pals Angie, Nancy and Antonella tonight.

It's been a long time since I've crafted with these girls and it will definitely be a laugh a minute (it normally is)

We like to get together every so often and I usually design a bunch of cards and show them how to make them. In the past, we've also done it where each person designs and brings all the supplies for 1 card - then we each take turns being the teacher. Well - that was short lived because the girls found it easier for ME just to do it all....hmmm....am I being takin' advantage of??

I'm going to be sharing a few cards that are part of my Stamping 301 class that I'm teaching over at Scrapalicious.

This first card uses these really interesting peel and stick stickers. They are embossed and come in black, white, gold and silver - Perfect for those who are not into embossing with ink/power and the heat gun.

The stickers are applied to water colour paper and then painted with Twinkle H2O's. H2O's are really a great product - they all have a metallic finish to them.

Embossing (or these stickers) are a great idea for when you are water colouring - the "walls" help hold the paint in the right location.

This will be my last post about Barry and we will get back to our regular scheduled program...

(you should be thankful that I can't afford tickets to see Barbra Streisand 'cause this would have gone on for months!)

Here is the story...

Online I am quite vocal about my love for Barry but at work - I am quiet like a mouse...and this was my downfall.

My office holds medical conferences and this past weekend we had a conference on.

Well guess who was staying at the very same hotel??

Yes - you are screaming right now aren't you??

My co-worker was standing at the concierge desk and who walks up behind her but Barry Manilow. So Lori turns to him and says "Oh, You're Barry Manilow!" and he says "Yes I am, I'm performing at the ACC" and she replies non nonchalantly "That's great - well, enjoy your stay in Toronto!"

As Lori is telling me this story - I am freaking out - I told her that I was at the concert etc and I'm a big fan.

AND

What does she say? "Man, if you had told me that you were going to be seeing him, I would have told him you were a fan and asked for his autograph!! He was super nice, and by himself, I'm sure he would have done it - I even had pen and paper in my hand!!"

DOH!! I could just die!!
